From what I know too, this is correct. Most 64-bit systems I've used
have suggested having a 32-bit version of your (browser, media player,
etc.) to work with the 32-bit codecs. Bit of a goofy workaround, but
until more (popular?) media format plugins are available for amd64 I
think that's what we're left with.
